I lived in Glasgow for 5 years, walked at night, in the weekends several times, never got stabbed. Yeah you'll find a lot of people drunk and a bit aggressive, especially in the city center, but I've never felt unsafe there. Especially in West End, where I lived. And it's true, people are really friendly in Glasgow.

Em, massive difference between Scottish English and Scots. Me speaking English with a few Scots words peppered in is a far step from a Rabbie Burns poem, which even I struggle to understand. Then within Scots there are significantly different dialects, such as Doric. A Glaswegian Scots speaker heading up to the north east coast will struggle to understand the locals. So first, can we clear up the distinction between Scottish English and Scots. Also, the English didn’t take our Gaelic. Gaelic was majorly from the west and north. It enjoyed a period in Scotland where it was the language of prestige. But the ordinary Joes in the south and east would still mainly have spoken Scots. Gaelic was replaced as the prestige language when the crowns merged. But blame it on our nobles rather than the English. And remember that they were probably Scots speakers with an easier affinity to Old English in any case.

okay honestly im trying to sound more scottish without knowin the actual way to use certain words. thats the thing because ive met those from scottland that are in America that have an accent but dont use the words the way they would back home i just want to sound like a scott thats been in America for a few years so their accent becomes more American English or muddled down.

Howd do Scots pronounce the Borders town of "Lyne" near Peebles... it is an old town and my ancestor William Laing was also known as William Lyne in Roxburghshire... I looked up the town of Lyne and on Wikipedia they state the name in Gaelic is "An Lainn" ... is it "Lain" or "Line" or "Linn"? thanks! Cheers
